How do you connect Meta lead ads to GoHighLevel?
Connect the Facebook or Instagram page to GoHighLevel, map every lead form field to a CRM field that already exists, and confirm the connection by submitting a real test lead and watching it arrive. The part that goes wrong is almost never the connection itself, it is field mapping and attribution: leads land with information in the wrong place, or with no record of which ad produced them.
What usually goes wrong
The integration itself is straightforward and well supported. Three things still go wrong regularly, and all three are silent, which is why they are usually discovered a month later when somebody tries to report on ad performance.
- Fields arrive in the wrong place, because a lead form question had no matching CRM field and ended up appended to a note or dropped.
- Attribution is lost, so every lead looks like it came from nowhere and no campaign can be judged.
- Phone numbers arrive in local format and are silently reinterpreted for the wrong country, after which nothing you send reaches the lead.
Do it in this order
- 1
1. Create the CRM fields first
Look at your lead form questions and make sure every one has somewhere to land. Doing this after leads start arriving means the early ones are stored differently from the later ones.
- 2
2. Connect the page, not just the ad account
Lead forms belong to the page. Connect with an account that genuinely has permission on that page, otherwise the connection appears to work and then quietly stops when the permission lapses.
- 3
3. Map every field explicitly
Including the ones that look obvious. Full name versus first and last name is the most common mismatch, and it is the one that makes personalised follow-up read badly.
- 4
4. Keep the campaign, ad set and ad
Store them on the contact. Without them you can report that Meta produced leads but never which ad produced customers, which is the only question worth asking.
- 5
5. Normalise the phone number
Into international format, on arrival. Meta lead forms collect numbers in whatever format the person types.
- 6
6. Decide the first response before going live
A paid lead that waits is money spent on nothing. The automatic reply should be ready and tested before the campaign starts, not added once leads are already sitting there.
- 7
7. Submit a real test lead
Use Meta's test lead tool and then a genuine submission. Confirm in the CRM that you get one contact, with the fields in the right places, the campaign attached and one notification.
Attribution, and why it is worth the effort
A CRM contact with no source is a lead you cannot learn from. You will know your spend and your total leads, and nothing about which creative, audience or campaign produced revenue. That is the difference between advertising you can improve and advertising you can only repeat.
Set the source on arrival rather than inferring it later. Contacts created through an API generally record no source at all unless one is supplied, which is why an account can look busy while its activity and attribution reporting stays empty.
Compliance points worth knowing before you launch
- Some categories of advertising are restricted and limit the targeting you may use. Check whether your offer falls into one before building audiences around it.
- Your lead form links to your privacy policy, and that policy needs to describe what you do with the data, including messaging consent if you intend to contact people by WhatsApp or SMS.
- If you intend to send marketing messages, capture the consent at the point of the lead form rather than assuming it.
Test the whole path before spending. The expensive version of this mistake is discovering a broken field mapping after a fortnight of paid leads.
